Life Insurance & Accidental Death (AD&D)

Lake County employees working a minimum of 30 hours a week are eligible for Life and AD&D coverage under Minnesota Life’s insurance plan. If someone ever retires or leaves Lake County, they can take the coverage with them and pay premiums directly to Minnesota Life.

  • Employer pays for the employee’s basic life and AD&D insurance (equal to one year’s annual salary with a minimum of $20,000)
  • Employees have option to buy additional supplementary Life and AD&D insurance for themselves and their dependents

  • Will Preparation Service
  • Travel Assistance Program.

Long-Term Disability

Lake County BCC Employees who work a minimum of thirty (30) hours per week are eligible for Long Term Disability coverage through Mutual of Omaha, provided they meet the plan qualifications.

  • Employer pays full cost for long-term disability.
  • There is a 180 Day Elimination period  (the waiting period before benefits are paid.)
  • The base long-term disability benefit is 60% of the employee’s monthly earnings, to a maximum of $5000 per month.
  • The employee also has an option to buy a rider that shortens the elimination period to 90 days.

Short-Term Disability - NEW!

Lake County BCC Employees who work a minimum of thirty (30) hours per week are eligible for Short-Term Disability coverage through Mutual of Omaha providing that they meet the plan qualifications.

  • Employee pays the full cost for short-term disability
  • Benefits begin on the 1st day of a disabling injury and on the 8th day of a disabling illness.
  • The short-term disability benefit is 60% of the employee’s weekly earnings, to a maximum of $1000 per week.
  • Short-term benefits are available for up to 13 weeks.
  • Disabilities that occur during the first 6 months of coverage due to a pre-existing condition during the 3 months prior to coverage are excluded.

Legal Services (Family Protector Plan) - NEW!

Lake County BCC Employees who are eligible for benefits now have the opportunity to enroll in a legal plan. This is an optional benefit the employee pays for each month that covers not only them but their families as well. U.S. Legal Services has designed their legal plan to make legal representation available and affordable to everyone. The plan covers the attorney’s fee, but if there are any other court costs items, the responsibility of those fees falls on the member. The following are just a few services U.S. Legal Services provide:

  • Consumer Law
  • Consultations with Attorney
  • Traffic Violations
  • Divorce (There is a 15 hour per year limit on the use of Family Law coverage, which is supplemented by a 1/3 discount on the attorney’s hourly fee thereafter.)
  • Disabilities that occur during the first 6 months of coverage due to a pre-existing condition during the 3 months prior to coverage are excluded.
