Commissioners cut ribbon for park improvements

The Lake County Board of County Commissioners applauded the recent work of the Parks and Trails Division at a grand-opening celebration on May 20 for a new dog park and fishing pier at Lake Idamere Park.

Two-legged and four-legged guests filled the park for the occasion at 12335 County Road 448, Tavares. Commissioners first cut the ribbon for the 80-foot long fishing pier extending into Lake Idamere. With a 360-square-foot platform, the pier is a prime spot for local anglers.

With accompanying canines, County Commissioners then celebrated the 1.5-acre dog park. The shaded park features three separate areas; one for larger dogs, another for smaller canines and a third for future expansion of a doggie obstacle course. The fenced-in area also offers multiple dog-waste and water stations.

Construction

A fruitful April brings closure to five projects
The Lake County Department of Public Works wrapped up a busy month of April by substantially completing five projects totaling more than $4 million. The projects included:

  • Forest Drive, Laurel Court, Hillcrest Drive — This special-assessment project paved three roads in the south Pine Lakes area to County standards: Forest Drive from a point south of Laurel Court to Hillcrest Drive, Laurel Court from Forest Drive to the end and Hillcrest Drive from  Overlook Drive to Forest Drive.
  • Legends Way — New construction of this two-lane collector roadway that serves as a frontage road from  North Hancock Road and Citrus Tower Boulevard in the Clermont area.
  • Keene and County Line roads – This project paved two clay roads in the Umatilla area: Keene Road from Peru Road to 100 feet north of County Line Road and County Line Road from Marion County to Keene Road. Phase II of Keene Road, which extends from 100 feet north of County Line Road to the pavement near State Road 19, is anticipated to bid this month.
  • Countywide resurfacing – This project resurfaced 26 different roads totaling more than 10 miles. For a detailed list of each road, click here.
  • County Road 19A (Dora Avenue) – This project constructed a sidewalk from Trinity Chapel Church to Dillard Street in the Tavares area.

Seat belts save lives
The Lake County Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST), a consortium of more than two dozen agencies including Lake County Government, Lake County Sheriff’s Office and local municipalities, are supporting the national “Click It or Ticket” enforcement mobilization.

“Safety belts clearly save lives,” said Noble Olasimbo, a member of the CTST and an engineer in the Lake County Department of Public Works. “But unfortunately too many people in Florida still need a tough reminder, so law enforcement agencies are going to be out in full force looking out for those who are not buckled up.”
