Pigs may never fly, but the hard-to-find merchandise at one Mount Dora shop sure does fly off the shelves.
According to store owner Barbara Weaver, When Pigs Fly features “a little bit of everything” to include antiques, folk art and primitives. Weaver stumbled upon the gingerbread home chocked full of unique knick knacks a couple of years ago and had to have it.
“It just gives you good vibes when you come in here. That’s what we go for,” she said.
The two-story shop sits on the corner of Highland Street and First Avenue. While the cutely decorated home is noticeable, the yard of eclectic art and lawn furniture is eye catching. Inside the shop is much of the same.
Unusual pieces adorn every corner of the home. Weaver picks up an old wooden hammer and notes that utilitarian pieces such as this are almost impossible to find. Her job of unearthing such artifacts never ends.
“I don’t want to be able to go downtown and find the same things,” she said. “I go to auctions and art shows to search out this unique stuff.”
Due to its one-of-a-kind nature, the shop’s inventory is constantly evolving. Along with some folk art merchandise that makes special appearances during select seasons, much of the goods in When Pigs Fly are made especially for the shop.
“A lot of what is in this shop is homemade,” Weaver said. “I try to feature Florida folk artists as much as I can.”
Among the Florida artists featured in When Pigs Fly are Janet Moses, Liz Csanigo, Patricia Lowsader and Paulette Andrews. From hand-painted windows to homemade dolls, these artists craft whimsical pieces exclusively for this Mount Dora boutique.
While folk art, antiques and primitives dominate the shop, it also features health and beauty supplies, vintage linens and candles.
“I have things here from $2 to $500 for some of the larger furniture pieces,” Weaver said.
Each month When Pigs Fly hosts an event in the yard. The celebrations typically include entertainment, refreshments and vendors peddling fresh produce, baked goods and plants. In April, the boutique sponsors an Easter bonnet competition. For more information about events at When Pigs Fly, call (352) 735-1555. |
